Cross Country

What a fabulous day we had at our Cross Country!  This event showcased our Ormond School values of confidence, perseverance and resilience.  It was wonderful to see our learners give it their all.
Another highlight was the tuakana-teina relationship that our seniors have with our juniors and our neighbours at the kindy next door - so many of them were running along in support of our younger friends.  It was neat to see so many of our whanau there supporting our learners too!

Literacy Circles

We are incorporating Literacy Circles into our reading programme in Rimu Learning Hub.  To start off with, our class are working on the same texts so that we get used to the different roles and are able to have a turn at each one.

There are 4 roles - Director, Sketch Artist, Quiz Master and Interpreter.

The Director introduces the book and the author and organises the order of people speaking to the group.  They introduce each person and their role and thank them for their contribution at the end.

The Sketch Artist draws a part of the book that they feel is an important part of the story.  This can include labels, diagrams and captions.

The Quiz Master writes down five questions from the book that need to be answered by the rest of the group at the end.  They write in the answers for each one as the group answer them.

The Interpreter chooses 2 tricky words from the story and writes down what they think the words mean.  They ask the group what they think the words mean and they then check with a dictionary.

Here are some photos of Literacy Circles in action!

STEM Challenge - Making a Catapult

This week, our STEM Challenge using the Learn, Create, Share model, was to create a Catapult.  This ties in with our Discover the Past theme, especially as this week we are looking at inventors and inventions.  We tried 2 different types of catapults, but found the smaller, simpler one worked better.  Next we want to try and make a big catapult and see how far it goes!

Maths Quiz for New Zealand Maths Week.

This week in our Cybersmart lesson with Mrs Torrie, we were learning to link slides.

We had to create a Maths Quiz.  We thought about the Maths problems we wanted to use and thought about a theme.  For each question, we would write the question, give 1 correct answer and 3 incorrect answers.  Then we linked the slides to the answers so that when we had a correct answer, it was linked to the correct answer slide and then took us to to the next question.  If we answered incorrectly, then it was linked to the incorrect answer slide and took us back to the same problem.
Our learners were so engaged in this task and we are looking forward to trying out each others' quizzes.

Here is Izaac's Quiz...

Interschool Football Tournament

Our whole class participated in this tournament and we entered 4 teams - a boys team, a girls team and two mixed teams.
All teams played hard and played fair - ka pai tō mahi team Rimu!
Thank you to Mrs Langford for the great action shots!
